This piece is an expression of feminine beauty and strength. A reflection on how I understand myself as a woman and how that has changed over the course of my life. I think it’s also a celebration of the joy of being a woman. It’s as if I’m at a dinner party going clink clink clink on my wine glass and as the room quiets down I raise my glass and say, “To all women everywhere. You are beautiful. You are loved. You are cherished!” Then we all share a toast. To womanhood.
Because of the nature of the piece, I had to twist Toby’s arm to write a poem for it. He said he feels like it’s not his place and then I reminded him how much I need him to be my voice. To speak as if he’s me. And I’m so happy I convinced him (again) because the poem is beautiful. I love the interaction between the sky and the narrator. For me the sky is a metaphor for several different things at once. She’s myself, she’s my best friend, she’s God, she’s the universe, she’s all women everywhere – like the collective voice of femininity.
