beginnings
My current body of work, Of Land and Sky, Whimsical and Free, began in the summer of 2013. At the time, I didn’t know exactly what it would be - but I did have an idea of what I wanted. I wanted to capture a sense of wonder and hope. I wanted to find a way to portray an almost naive yearning for something more hopeful and less burdensome than what life often could be.
Animals and birds began fill up my sketch book. I began to collect references for antiques and anything with a vintage feel or look. These things brought feelings of nostalgia and represented ideas of innocence, simplicity, and virtue - all of which I wanted to have a place in the work.
I didn’t always include collage elements at first. Some of these early works have no collage at all. As time went on, the work evolved and so did my technique. And although I still feel the original themes persist in my work, now I more often tackle larger, more complex ideas, layering in the symbolism and metaphors in ways I never would have during the first couple of years. And I like how I’ve changed and how the work has changed.
But still, when I go back and examine these earlier pieces I find so many things I love. I love the simplicity. And I feel the sense of wonder - unburdened - and I appreciate it so much. I hope you do as well. :)
